All the books I've read in 2019
5. Small Island by Andrea Levy
Did I finish it or abandon it? I FINISHED IT
Would I recommend it? YES
Wow, this is one of the books that raises the bar and shows you what is possible. If Fever (my favourite book of last year) was a masterclass in story structure, then Small Island is masterclass in character. The four protagonists are so wonderfully brought to life and the author shows just how effective humour can be in engaging the reader.
The story is set around the time of World War II and deals with subjects such as identity, racism, immigration, poverty, post-traumatic stress and lost dreams. It's fantastic.
